MBA Program Types
When it comes to MBA program types, you have several options to choose from. There are different MBA programs out there for different types of students and learning styles. Originally, the full-time, two-year model was the most common. This type of program was more stringent in design and curriculum. Relatively few schools offered the degree and it was most commonly offered in a full-time format. Over the years, many factors have changed which have directly influenced the way MBA programs are structured. Due to a changing business place, changing needs of students, and a popularity of the MBA, business schools now offer the MBA in different types or formats.
While programs come in a variety of names and descriptions, all programs tend to fall into five different categories…
- Full Time MBA - A type of program that is offered in a one-year or two-year format. Students give up working for some or all of the program to study on a full-time basis.
- Part Time MBA - A type of program that is designed to fit the needs of working professionals. Students can study part-time while continuing to work.
- Executive MBA - A type of program tailored specifically for company executives. Students executive level managers and study part-time while continuing to maintain their career.
- Distance MBA - A type of program available to remote students requiring little or no residency. Students typically study part-time while enjoying the convenience of distance learning.
- MBA Dual Degree - An MBA degree combined with another degree allowing for concurrent completion of two degrees. Students must comply with requirements of both degrees.
Flexible Programs:
Some programs do not fit neatly into one of these five categories. Many business schools offer what I would call a "flexible" program. This type of program is one that can fit into more than one of the MBA program types (like full and part time options for the same program). It can also refer to full time programs that can be accelerated if certain prerequisites are met.
"Specialized" Programs:
A specialized program is my name for a program that caters to specific industries or professions like Health care or Engineering through specialty curriculum or a specialization. Although specialized programs seem like a different program type, they typically fall into the MBA program types mentioned above.Sometimes, people refer to other graduate business programs as MBA programs. This site focuses solely on actual MBA degrees. Except in special cases, I would recommend getting a specialized MBA over a Master of Science degree in a specific business field.
