MBA Laptop

What is an MBA laptop? It is a laptop computer you will need to get for use throughout your whole MBA program. While not all MBA programs require one, it is a good idea to get a laptop.

A laptop is perfect for MBA students because it allows mobility. You can have the same computer for all your MBA activities: taking notes in class, creating presentations, conducting research, doing assignments, doing work with a group, etc. It sort of becomes your electronic filing cabinet all in one spot.

I have listed a few considerations for getting a laptop that will be suitable for your MBA. This is a scaled-down buyer's guide, with the MBA student specifically in mind.

  • Mac versus PC: A few years ago, this may not have even been a consideration. However, with Apple making a comeback, you may want to look at both options. Most people are comfortable with Windows so they opt for a PC. You may find you are more compatible in business school with a PC. Plus, PCs are considered more for business anyway. If you do go for a Mac, make sure it is the newer Intel version, so you can also run Windows on it.

  • New versus Used: While you can sometimes find great deals on used or refurbished laptops, I would recommend buying new. Purchase a new laptop at the beginning with confidence that know it will last throughout your program. You do not want any unnecessary interruptions during your MBA. Whether you new or used, make sure to get a good warranty...three years is preferable.

  • Custom-built versus Pre-built: This option has more to do with how comfortable you are with technology. If you are very comfortable with technology, you have many options to customize a laptop. Many brands will let you get on their website and choose all the components you need. Otherwise, you will want to order a pre-built model that fits your needs.

A word on brands...there are many good brands out there for your MBA laptop. It really a matter of what you are comfortable with and what offers the best value. I tend to lean toward Dell or HP (or Apple if you want a Mac). I have had good experiences with these brands and they give you lots of options.

Laptop Features:

That hardest thing to do seems to be to match the features and specifications with how you use the laptop. Since this is an MBA laptop, our job is a bit easier. Still, there are some decisions you about your MBA laptop.

  • Processor (CPU) - this is the brain of the computer, so get the best. I prefer offerings from Intel. Avoid value-line models like the Celeron processor. Look at the latest specs in GHz and see what you can afford.

  • Memory (RAM) - this is the short-term storage used while the laptop is on. It affects how much you can do at one time (multi-tasking). The more the better - side on having too much. I would start at 1 GB and go from there.

  • Hard Drive - there are a few things to consider on the hard drive. The obvious one is space. These days, you will not get anything less than 80 GB and that should be sufficient. The other consideration is the speed of the hard drive in RPMs. The higher the better.

The CPU, RAM, and Hard Drive will drastically effect performance and reliability more than anything else on your MBA laptop.

  • Screen size - This is more of a personal preference. You can get a really small screen (less that 14 inch) that allows for more portability. On the other side of the coin, you may want a large, wide-screen laptop for easier viewing.

  • Networking - You will want both a wireless card supporting the latest wireless frequencies as well as a Ethernet LAN jack. You will run into both kinds of networks.

  • Software - the operating system (OS) is a must to run the laptop. Most people choose the latest flavor of Windows. Some people opt for Apple these days too. As far as applications, make sure to get Microsoft Office. You can get a deal as a student - there are versions that run on PC and Mac now. At a minimum, make sure your version of Office has Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Ports and Drives - make sure you have ports for a printer, keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc. Also make sure you have an adequate CD or DVD drive. Get one that is writable so you can periodically make backups of your files.

  • Extras - there are extras that are not essential but you still may want to consider. You may want to get a docking station (plus monitor, keyboard, and mouse) for easy use as a workstation. You may also want to get an extra batter and power cord. You do not want to be stuck if these things die.

When it comes to MBA laptop purchasing time, you will also want to look at price and warranty. Find a good value, but do not get the lowest-end model. Shoot for the middle to upper-tier laptops. You want to make sure you have a solid laptop for your MBA. Warranty is essential. You will want a plan that covers you for at least three years and offers quick turn-around time. You may even consider getting a warranty that covers dropping or other accidental damage. After all, you will be using your laptop a lot.
