MBA Dual Degree

The MBA dual degree is an MBA program combined with another degree program allowing for concurrent completion of two degrees. It can also be called a joint degree.

Usually there is a benefit to combining the degrees. For instance getting a joint MBA degree could shorten the time it usually takes to get both degrees individually.

This shortened time is due to the fact that certain classes count toward both degrees. Fewer overall classes can also contribute to fewer overall expenses.

It is important to note that the school usually specifies the dual MBA degrees. You usually cannot define a dual degree on your own.

Quite often the degrees are conferred from different departments or colleges within the university so you have to make sure you meet the various admission and degree requirements for both programs.

Dual Degree Examples:

An MBA could seemingly go with any degree. In fact, we are seeing more and more different degrees combined with the MBA. Here are some common examples of MBA dual degrees:

  • A Juris Doctor (Law) degree combined with an MBA (JD/MBA). This tends to be a very common joint degree.

  • An MBA combined with a masters degree in Information Systems (MBA/MIS).

  • An MBA combined with a masters in Engineering (MBA/MSE).

  • An MBA combined with a masters in any healthcare field (Physician MBA, Healthcare Management, Pharmaceuticals).

Another common use of the joint degree is an undergraduate business degree combined with an MBA (BS/MBA). In other words, you can finish your bachelors degree and add another year to get the MBA.

My program at SUU had this option for combining a business degree with the MBA. The admission requirements were the same, but there was no work experience requirement. Incidently, the business school where I received my undergraduate degree was offering the same option. I elected not to do it at that time.

An MBA dual degree is an efficient way to earn an MBA combined with another degree. The only down side is that joint programs always take longer than just the MBA itself, so take that into consideration.
