Distance MBA Programs

Distance MBA programs are designed for students who cannot attend an MBA program in person.

School may require very little "on-campus time" or none at all. This program type varies greatly among business schools.

The biggest advantage of a distance program is the convenience it offers. Not having to attend a physical location affords a student great flexibility.

On the other hand such convenience can also be a disadvantage. Some students are not self motivated and work better in a class setting.

Keep in mind, most distance MBA students are also working full time while going to school.

So, students have to juggle family, work, and school demands during the program.

  • Location is a factor only because distance programs allow the student to attend the program from virtually anywhere. In essence location becomes more of a question of where the student will study (like one's home or office).
  • Accreditation is always important, but may be even more important in a distance MBA program. It is easier for an unaccredited school to operate online. Plus, with the rise of the Internet, there has been an increase in diploma mill activity.
  • The format of a distance learning program will determine the program type as well as the length. In other words, many distance programs are part time, but executive and full time distance programs also exist.
  • You may not ever meet your classmates in person. However, you will likely interact frequently with the aid of technology. This program type likely attracts a diverse group of students.
  • The learning methods are by default going to be different in this kind of program. There may be more reading and less interaction in person. However, there are many effective ways things are learned from a distance.

An MBA program through distance learning is the best if you are looking for a delivery method that fits your lifestyle. Working full time while attending school can be quite a juggling act. You have to weigh out the benefits for yourself.
