AACSB online MBA programs are becoming more and more popular. Yet, a few years ago there were just a handful.

To realize the significance of AACSB accredited schools offering online MBA programs, you need to understand the role of AACSB accreditation in business education.

The AACSB is an accrediting organization that has been around for about 90 years. Accreditation through the AACSB is considered the top accreditation that a business school or MBA can receive.

The AACSB has strict guidelines and rules for accreditation. These guidelines are more traditional in nature. Therefore, more traditional schools (such as well-known and/or top-ranked schools) earn this accreditation.

It would be a big step for "traditional" business schools to venture into something as "non-traditional" as online MBA programs. They have to make sure they stay within the AACSB guidelines so they can maintain their accreditation.

When the Internet exploded onto the scene, many AACSB accredited schools must have wondered if it was a fad or if it was here to stay. There must have been a question of quality about online MBA programs when comparing to on-campus MBA programs.

Much of that has changed! At last count, there are more than 40 AACSB accredited schools offering online or distance MBA programs. They have obviously found ways to deliver MBA programs from a distance while staying within accreditation guidelines. Not to mention, schools typically claim that the quality of online programs are on-par with their on-campus counterparts.
